The British Gas Energy Trust, an independent charity funded by British Gas, was set up to support individuals and families who are struggling to pay their bills, regardless of energy provider.
The Trust currently offers two funds:
- Individuals and Families Fund - currently open to credit and pre-payment meter customers.
- British Gas Energy Support Fund - opens 4 November 2024.
Both are intended to tackle fuel poverty by clearing the energy debts of struggling households and respond to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
It should be noted that the Trust does not award cash payments, but will instead credit the householder account.
- Individual and Families Fund will cover arrears of between £50 and £1,700.
- British Gas Energy Support Fund will cover arrears of between £250 and £2,000.
British Gas Energy Support Fund applicants must:
- Be British Gas credit or pre-payment meter customer.
- Live in England, Scotland or Wales.
- Not have received a British Gas Energy Trust grant within the last 12 months.
- Be seeking a grant to clear an outstanding debt on a current or open gas, electricity or dual fuel energy account in their own name or be a member of that household. The energy account must relate to their main residence.
- Have electric and/or gas debt of between £250 and £2,000 on an active energy account for a main residence.
- Be in or facing fuel poverty.

The Energy Support Fund will open for applications at 9am on 4 November 2024.
