Capital grants are available through the Tree Production Innovation Fund (TPIF) to support the development of technologies and techniques that enhance tree production across England. The scheme aims to help meet the government's target of increasing woodland cover to 16.5% of total land by 2050.
Up to £1.5 million is available for 2025/26, with applicants able to propose multi-year projects running up to March 2028. All applications must detail outputs to be delivered by March 2026. Projects must cost at least £20,000 and can receive up to £200,000 per year.
Applications must address at least one of eight sector challenges, including forest reproductive material use, automation, biosecurity and tree establishment. Funding is open to private sector organisations, public bodies in partnership with private sector groups, academic institutions, growers, research suppliers and consortia.
Applicants must contribute to enhancing quantity, quality and/or diversity of trees produced for planting in England.
Costs that can be claimed include salaries for researchers and support staff, project-specific materials, equipment depreciation, travel, consultancy and licensed knowledge. Public bodies must work with private sector third parties to be eligible. Previously funded TPIF projects are encouraged to reapply.
The deadline for applications is 9 July 2025 (23:59).
